Training Programmes

A three days training programme on ‘Basic Statistics for Data Analysis in Agriculture for UG students’ of Assam Agricultural University was organised from 25-27 April, 2024. The training was jointly organised by KVK, lakhimpur and IARI Assam. The training was coordinated by Dr. Prasanta Kumar Pathak, Senior Scientist and Head (KVK), Dr. Jyothsna Das, SMS from KVK and Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya, Head (NRM) and I/C IARI Assam, Dr. Arpan Bhowmik, Senior Scientist, Dr. Dibyendu Deb, Senior Scientist and Mr. Bhagirath Das, Scientist. Around 30 students participated in the Training.

 

A 3-days skill oriented training programme on “Aquarium fabrication & ornamental fish keeping for entrepreneurship development” was organized at ICAR-IARI Assam during 3-5 April 2024 under the aegis of ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai. The programme was participated by 25 unemployed rural youth of the region and 2 faculty members of nearby Gogamukh college”. Shri Lakhinath Lagachu and Ms. Sheetala Chintey, DFDO & FDO of Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam, Dhemaji district graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour in the inaugural session. The training included scientific talks and practical demonstrations on techniques of glass aquarium fabrication, aquarium decorations, ornamental fish keeping, management of water quality, fish feeding, fish health and marketing. The participants expressed their satisfaction on their knowledge gained during the programme. Dr. Manmeet Singh, GM (Environment), NHPC Ltd and Mr. Raushan Kumar, DM (Fisheries), NHPC Ltd. graced the valedictory function as the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour respectively. The scientists of ICAR-IARI Assam shared their views on the programme. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Deepjyoti Baruah, Principal Scientist (Aquaculture) and Dr. AK Balange, HoD, APF alongwith Mr. DaU Ruhi Pde, Mr. Arunjyoti Baruah, Dr. Madhabhai Choudhury, Scientists of the Division Division of Animal, Poultry and Fisheries (APF), ICAR-IARI, Assam has organized an awareness training programme on Vaccination, De-worming and Health Camp for pig farmers from 18th to 19th March, 2024. About 30 farmers from nearby villages have participated in the programme. Dr. Amjad K. Balange, HoD (APF) was the course Director and Dr. Manish Pandey as training co-ordinator. Dr. Azhaguraja M and Dr. Bornalee Handique highlighted about the Helminth infection, piglet anaemia and its control measures. Two resource persons Dr. Anil Kumar Pegu, Veterinary Officer, Gogamukh, Assam and Dr. Raktim Saikia, Veterinary Officer, Dhemaji, Assam co-ordinated the health camp at Dirpai Chapori on 19th March, 2024. Around 30 pigs were vaccinated against Classical swine fever and farmers were provided with medicine kits. All the farmers were distributed with certificate of participation on the valedictory session.

  

Awareness Programs

110 students of Ghilamora Higher Secondary School, North Lakhimpur visited IARI Assam on May 14, 2024 as part of their educational excursion. The students were made aware of the unique role IARI Assam will play for developing agricultural scenario of Northeast India and the opportunities of Agricultural Education. The students also visited different laboratories and were made aware of the work being done here. The exposure visit was coordinated by Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya, Head ( NRM) and I/C IARI Assam, Mr. Bhagirath Das, Scientist, and Mr. Umakant Dash, Scientist.

On March 19, 2024, 24 students from Nilakh High School, Dhemaji visited IARI Assam campus where students were made aware about the scope and opportunities for Agricultural Education. The exposure visit was coordinated by Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya, Head ( NRM) and I/C IARI Assam, Dr. Arpan Bhowmik, Senior Scientist and I/C PME cell of IARI Assam, Mr. Bhagirath Das, Scientist, Dr. Ravi Bhushan, Scientist and Mr. Umakant Dash, Scientist.

Field Day

On November 30, 2023, a field day on “Scientific Millet contribution for food and nutrition security” was organized at the research farm of Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Dirpai, Gogamukh, Dhemaji, Assam by a team of scientists which includes Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya, In-charge, IARI Assam, Dr. Arpan Bhowmik, Senior Scientist, Dr. Dibyendu Deb, Senior Scientist and Dr. Sunil Mandi, Scientist. A total of 60 farmers participated in the programme from different parts of Dhemaji and North Lakhimpur districts of Assam. Out of the 60 farmers, 50 are female farmers. Majority of the farmers belong to ST category. Dr. Lohit Kumar Baishya, Head (Natural Resources Management) and In-charge, IARI Assam highlighted the importance of Millet crop as a climate resilient crop. He also discussed the nutrition value of millet crop, the cultivation practices and the post harvest use of millet crop. Dr. Arpan Bhowmik discussed about the importance of practicing and adapting millet crop for cultivation as a sustainable livelihood technique for enhancement of income of farming community as this crop is having a great scope for post-harvest value addition. Dr. Sunil Mandi discussed in detail the cultivation practices to be followed for Millet crop, especially finger millet in this region of Assam.
